The Monday Morning Test: How To Know If Your Strategy Is Real or Performative

Here's a simple test. Monday morning — before any meetings, before you open your strategy document, before anyone prompts you — what do you actually do first? That first action is your real strategy. Not the one in your pitch deck. Not the OKRs from January. The one your default state executes when there's no external structure guiding you. In most stuck startups, the gap between the stated strategy and the Monday morning strategy is substantial. One was written with full cognitive bandwidth in a planning session. The other runs on habit and pattern. Closing that specific gap is where execution improvement lives. Most founders I talk to have never explicitly looked there.
